Fed Up With School Lunch

In case you missed it, I wrote about our cooking project with the kids at the blog, Fed Up With School Lunch. This is one of the warmest, most passionate communities of people on the Internet and I was thrilled to be a part of it all. There is great support out there for kids and this blog proves that. Check it out and tell me what you think.

For those of you who don't know - the blog is written by Mrs. Q, a mid-western school teacher who has promised to eat school lunch with her kids every day for a year. She is actually eating what the kids are eating in school and writing about the experience. She is one of those people on the front lines of making food better for kids and you gotta love her for that. The chick has moxie. I look forward to meeting her one day and calling her by her real name.

The funny thing is, this shouldn't be such an extraordinary thing, eating what kids are eating. I mean, kids have been eating crap lunch (crap meals) every day, for years, and rarely has the public been up in arms. It's been accepted that this is what we feed kids. It's not even questioned. But when a grown up eats school lunch, it seems revolutionary, brave, crazy. I think sometimes, in our collective consciousness as a nation, we just think kids should be okay with less than they deserve, that crappy food is good enough, that they are too little, too powerless, too stupid to know the difference. Honestly, I think that's what we think about our kids.

Hopefully, our little cooking program with kids at Central Park East II proves that kids care when given the choice. I also want to thank Stop & Shop for funding this coming year's cooking program in the Pre-K. They are a good company. They care about families and kids and what they're eating, and they've made it possible for us to keep going. If you are on the East Coast and you have a chance to choose Stop & Shop over another chain, do it and think of me and know I'm appreciative for their (and your) support.

More later. Today is Edie's birthday. She's four. And she's just waking up...Everything is ahead of us.

Found your blog after reading your guest post yesterday, and I think it's terrific. Love your voice, your humor and perspective, and most of all your respect for kids.

I think you nailed it when you wrote that "in our collective consciousness as a nation, we just think kids should be okay with less than they deserve, that crappy food is good enough, that they are too little, too powerless, too stupid to know the difference."

That's the exact mentality I'm trying to combat over at my blog, which is called Spoonfed: Raising kids to think about the food they eat. Hope you'll check it out some time: http://www.spoonfedblog.net

In the meantime, I'll keep reading Yummy Mummy and nodding my head in agreement. So glad to have found another kindred spirit.

Hope your little one has a magical birthday today.

I am so glad this subject is being tackled. I am also fed up with school snacks and organized snacks at organized activities.

I am so glad that I met you at BlogHer for your recipes are exactly what I am needing right now.

I have been talking about, promising, to take my cooking to a higher level and now you will be my guide.

As for kid lunches, I'm heading over to the website right now to get a jump start on school lunch ideas.

Sorry that we didn't get to spend more time together.

Let's stay connected so that when your Australian, rock climbing husband wants to come to Colorado, you have a place to stay, that is if you can handle 3 boys...but you're a New Yorker, of course you can!

That's just about the sweetest thing anyone has said to me all week. Thanks.

Back tomorrow (Wed) with a new post and have a bunch more stories nearly ready to go up after that.

Thanks for missing me. That's awfully nice. xo

I like to shove the corn cobs up your daughter ass whole and thrust over and over while her ass bleeds and she pleads for me to stop it
